FiveM add-on vs replacement clothing

Compare add-on and replacement FiveM clothing, understand drawable indexes and conflicts, and plan a server wardrobe update without losing track of outfits.

What actually changes?

Add-on

A prepared add-on resource registers its own clothing collection and streams its assets. Existing clothing can remain available. The supplied metadata matters as much as the models and textures.

Replacement

A replacement targets an existing asset identity. Characters using that clothing choice can display the replacement. It is useful for deliberately updating a known item, but it can also change saved outfits that rely on it.

A ZIP filename or the presence of a stream folder does not establish which method a pack uses. Check the creator’s README, manifest and metadata. Do not convert one method into the other by guessing filenames.

Choose for the wardrobe you maintain

Use a prepared add-on when you want to add a separate collection while keeping the existing wardrobe available. Expect to check that the appearance menu exposes it and that saved outfits still select the intended pieces after updates.

Use a replacement when changing an existing choice is intentional and you have identified everyone and every uniform preset that uses it. For example, replacing a particular top can change a staff uniform even if nobody edits the saved outfit.

Neither method is automatically faster, lighter or compatible with every server. Asset complexity, texture use, naming, the game build and the rest of the resource set all matter. An add-on can still conflict with another resource if their identifiers or streamed assets collide.

A drawable number needs context

Record the character model, component, drawable and texture together. “Top 12” alone is not a portable installation instruction. A menu can show a global index, while a pack’s documentation can describe an index within its own collection.

Two ways a clothing system can address an item

Global index

Ped → component → index across collections → texture

Collection-based index

Ped → component → named collection → local index → texture

Cfx.re provides collection-based natives to avoid global-index shifts caused by new official game collections. Your appearance system must actually use and save that information to benefit. Renaming a custom collection or rebuilding its local ordering can still invalidate your own references.

For example, the Halloween pack documents component 11, local drawable 0 for its tee and 1 for its jacket. These are collection-local values, not universal top numbers for every clothing menu.

Separate asset conflicts from menu problems

If an item appears when one pack is enabled but changes when another starts, compare their streamed filenames and collection identifiers on a staging server. Starting one last may hide the symptom without resolving the collision. Keep a record of the conflicting pair and ask the creator for the intended resource naming.

If the garment renders through a developer’s controlled test but is absent from the shop, investigate menu restrictions, cached lists and outfit configuration. Installing another copy of the asset is unlikely to repair that layer. See the missing-clothing troubleshooting flow.

A practical update checklist

  1. Back up the resource and affected outfit configuration. Keep the untouched download and record its version.
  2. List the supplied resource names, supported bodies and clothing components. Keep the creator’s folder structure intact.
  3. Test one change on staging with a fresh outfit and a saved outfit. Include job uniforms if they use the affected components.
  4. Reconnect after the controlled resource update. Test again with the normal set of clothing resources enabled.
  5. Keep the previous working version available until you have checked the change with the server team.

Removing a pack is also a wardrobe change. Review saved outfits and presets before removal; do not assume remaining global indexes will retain their meaning.

Before installation

Confirm whether your download is a complete resource or loose assets intended for a clothing build tool. A generic manifest pasted from a tutorial cannot substitute for the metadata a specific pack requires. Use the installation walkthrough for prepared resources and the file-type guide to identify what you received.

If you are a player, send the product’s compatibility notes to your server’s clothing admin before purchasing. Owning a pack does not give you permission to install it on someone else’s server.
